50,000 people pursuing brilliant ideas

Christian Perez | 03.08.2015

We all have ideas, some are good, some are bad, and some are just downright brilliant ideas! We all have these, but we don’t all pursue them. We just leave these ideas in our heads. Some of us don’t go through with our ideas because we’re scared, have doubt, or think nothing can actually come of them. These are valid concerns, but not going after anything isn’t going to provide any results either. I’ve been going after my ideas since I was 16 years old, failing most of the time, or making small things that only I care about. However, just recently I made something small that ended up being used by 50,000 people (The Name App). Ironically enough, my idea was to help people with their ideas. I think it’s incredibly important that we go after the things that we believe in. If we don’t work on our own ideas, someone else will pay us to work on theirs.

Creating The Name App

I created an app that allows people to search available names across major domains & social media platforms. This app was made to serve my own need. All day I come up with several ideas, good and bad, and the first thing I do is think of a name. To make sure the name isn’t taken, in the past I had to check about 4 or 5 different websites. I needed a simple way to do this quickly, so The Name App was born.

In the first 3 months, the app helped over 10,000 people. It was initially featured on Product Hunt, One Page Love, and a few other smaller blogs worldwide. The iOS version was also featured in the Apple AppStore in several countries. Then on its 4th month a writer for a huge tech blog, The Next Web, featured my app in a list of “300 awesome free things.” In only 2 weeks, the article drove over 40,000 people to the app. It was amazing to see those kind of numbers for an app that I made.

My thoughts on the importance of following your ideas, were now confirmed by 50,000 people from all over the world. This is how I know, I should be sharing this.

Go after your ideas

No matter how small you think it is, you never know how people are going to react to your idea. I believe that as long as we are following our own ideas there is no such thing as failure. As we come across ideas that don’t work, we’ll learn things that will help us on our next ideas.

Write down your idea, and really think about the viability of it. Here is a small list I created from things I ask my consulting clients:

  • What is the problem you are solving?
  • What is your solution?
  • Who is this solution for?
  • Are there competitors? How are you better?
  • How is this going to make money?

I’m always here to help

Whether it’s indirectly through interactions with the name app, or by having conversations during consulting sessions, I am here to help. As a designer, I’ve made a whole career of helping people follow their ideas. I’ve worked with huge agencies to work on the ideas of big brands. I’ve even worked in several small startups helping with their unique ideas. Just recently I started really following my own. I know about following your ideas, and I can help mold yours into viable businesses, work with me.
